Self-Service User Empowerment

As evidenced by the prevalence of Self-Service BI & Analytics initiatives amongst our customers, many organizations are looking to move toward a landscape where users are empowered to drive their own reporting and analytics. Many of our customers find themselves with IT organizations that are hampered down by reporting requests, creating backlogs and long turnaround times for initiatives that could provide valuable insights to their organizations. This backlog also prevents IT departments from focusing efforts on new technology initiatives that could generate business value.

Though the decision to invest in a platform that enables self-service BI and Analytics is often relatively straightforward, many organizations have struggled to recognize the full value of their investment. After making investments in self-service BI and Analytics solutions, many organizations struggle to create an environment that ensures their people are appropriately trained and supported, whilst upholding best practices and fostering a sense of community.

Our approach to User Empowerment can help organizations create more power users who are well equipped to work confidently, responsibly, and valuably within their Self-Service BI and Analytics platform.

How we help

At Thorogood, we work with our customers to understand what the value of a power user is for their unique organization and then jointly define Self-Service platforms and empowerment programs to allow that value to come to fruition.

We provide a differentiated approach to user capability development and collaterals. Our programs are founded in techniques that serve end users. We customize the content and delivery of our programs to combine relevant data, use cases, tools and best practices in order to provide education and materials that work for that customer. We define our capability development programs and collaterals based on the following principles:

  • Use Case & Tool Training – Our programs combine relevant data and use cases, as well as tool functionality.
  • Customized Curriculum – We start with topics we have used with other customers and refine accordingly with business and technology stakeholders.
  • Flexible Delivery – Whether regional or global, we define in-person and virtual sessions to work with the roles and locations of the people in the program.
  • Community – We help create bustling user communities within organizations for ongoing collaboration and support.
  • Use of Technology – We use innovative approaches to facilitate virtual training delivery and collaterals including web break outs, on demand knowledge repositories, and short, instructional videos.
  • Coaching – Our training is delivered by consultants with our team available for one-on-one sessions outside of training, addressing issues customers are facing in their work.

What it looks like

The principals outlined above lead into the structure of our User Empowerment programs. The process begins by identifying and engaging the right individuals so the investment made in users will outlive the program itself. These users enroll in a curriculum that is customized, utilizing relevant sample data and integrating technologies from the beginning, so training easily translates to everyday usage. We provide support throughout the program, keeping users involved in their personal development and shaping the Self-Service culture of the company. Above all, the business needs and standards are kept at the forefront of the development process.

User Empowerment

As an example, a User Empowerment program might aim to develop users within three groupings:

Business Users proficient in interacting with existing reports and exploring data in existing data models

Power Users able to complete advanced ad-hoc analysis that demonstrates best practices, which can be published for consumption by others

Trainers fluent in tools and best practices, and able transfer knowledge and expertise to wider community

In this case, the goals of the program will include expanding each of these pools of users, thereby strengthening the knowledge base throughout the company. New users who are just beginning to consume data will have the support and resources to work towards becoming a power user. This particular program structure produces an end state with trainers who are well equipped to expand others’ capabilities further.

Throughout the program, adoption and success of the training can be measured in a variety of ways. Tracking tool usage and report creation, and providing assessments after training courses provide quantitative measures. Ultimately, however, what success looks like is dependent on the company’s needs and goals. Defining this success is one of the first steps in developing your company’s User Empowerment program.
