Oracle has built this compelling BI platform in large part on Corporate acquisitions over the past 18 months and the recent release of Oracle 11g. With the purchases of Siebel and Hyperion Oracle were able to introduce the Oracle Business Intelligence Suite and Oracle’s Hyperion Enterprise Performance Management applications including the market leading OLAP server, Essbase.

The Oracle Business Intelligence Suite Standard Edition One and Enterprise Editions are the re-incarnation of the product which Oracle acquired from its purchase of Siebel, and who Siebel had acquired from nQuire.
This product is a lightweight, functional, rapid and flexible toolset which can plug into almost any environment (Oracle or not) and very quickly allow the creation of attractive reports, dashboards, scorecards and more. Its power is in the ease of use it presents at the front end, with the sophisticated integration capabilities it allows at the back end, while at the same time preventing that back end complex logic from being exposed to the business user. The business user interacts with a business model which they understand and can navigate simply to create attractive, functional reports for general consumption by themselves and others. The toolset also includes advanced alerting and scheduling capabilities, off-line access to data as well as the ability to produce highly formatted reports to precise layout specifications.
The purchase of Hyperion brought Oracle the Essbase multi-dimensional technology, one of the leading multi-dimensional technologies on the market today (in addition to Oracle’s own Express product, see next section). The Essbase model brings to Oracle’s arsenal of capabilities the ability to create flexible, fast, pre-aggregated sets of data for slice and dice analysis. Essbase is also a very functional and popular choice for planning and budgeting systems because of its advanced data write back capabilities and is in fact one of the key components supporting the Oracle Hyperion Planning application.
Oracle has always been famous for its resilient and powerful relational database, but what if a multi-dimensional technology could benefit from the same features and capabilities? Well in Oracle it can, with a fully embedded multi-dimensional technology available in the relational database. The OLAP database can be accessed seamlessly using normal SQL syntax. With the advanced query re-write capabilities of 11g, the performance of queries against relational schema can be improved if the database optimiser decides that the answers can be more rapidly returned to the user from the cube. This advanced and unique feature has the ability to transform many data warehouse solutions by dramatically improving query performance, but with the additional benefit of not requiring re-work of user reports at the front end.
Oracle also provides a number of pre-configured hardware platforms and applications for fast and effective deployments, as well as capabilities in ETL, warehouse management and design and data mining.
